The Badge
The Badge

Badges or patches are usually made from small pieces of metal, plastic or cloth but can also be made from, leather, textile fabric, rubber, etc.

Badges are commonly pinned or sewn to clothing, bags, footwear, transportation vehicles, home electrical equipment, etc.

A badge is awarded for a particular accomplishment. A patch, medal or accoutrement which is presented or displayed to indicate some feat of service, a special accomplishment, a symbol of authority granted by taking an oath (e.g., police and fire). A badge emblem is a characteristic mark to show support for a political organisation or belief. A badge is a device or token indicating membership in a society or group. A name badge is a sign of legitimate employment or student status, or as a simple means of identification. Badges are also used in advertising, publicity, and for branding purposes as a device to advertise text, pictures, logos or slogans.

Collectables Badges have become highly collectible: The Badge Collectors Circle has been in existence in the United Kingdom since 1980.

Military badges and medals are often used to denote qualifications received through military training, rank, etc.

Similarly, youth organizations such as scouting wear Scout Badges and guiding wear Girl Guide Badges to show group membership, awards and rank.

Textile badges or patches can be either woven or embroidered, and can be attached by gluing, iron-on or sewn. These are popular as name tags in school children’s clothing.

Members of fraternities and sororities often refer to the pins that signify their membership as badges.

One of the best-known badges is the typically star-shaped Sheriff badge, made famous in Westerns.

The BBC children's programme Blue Peter also awards its own "Blue Peter Badge"  to members of the public who appear on the show or achieve something unusual. These are highly collectible badges as they usually cannot be bought and fetch a very high price due to the demand for them.

A badge as an item can be worn as opposed to a title being a badge of sucess.
